It’s Acne Awareness Month - And Your Skin Deserves a Moment

Let's talk about the thing nobody loves talking about. Not because it's shameful — it absolutely isn't — but because it's one of those skin concerns that tends to get either dismissed ("just drink more water") or overcomplicated (seventeen-step routines, questionable TikTok hacks, toothpaste). You deserve better than both.

At Aquavie, Acne Awareness Month feels like the perfect moment to cut through the noise — with a little science, a little warmth, and zero judgment.

So…What Actually is Acne?

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions in the world, and yet it remains remarkably misunderstood. At its core, acne happens when hair follicles become blocked with a mixture of sebum (your skin's natural oil) and dead skin cells. Add in a particular bacterium called Propionibacterium acnes (or P. acnes, for short — the name says it all, really), and you have the perfect storm for inflammation, redness, and those unwelcome guests that tend to show up at the worst possible moments.

But acne isn't one-size-fits-all. Here are the main types you might recognise:

Blackheads (open comedones) — pores blocked with oxidised sebum that has darkened on contact with air. No, they're not dirt. Washing your face more aggressively won't shift them.

Whiteheads (closed comedones) — similar to blackheads, but the pore is closed, giving that characteristic small, white bump.

Papules — small, raised, red bumps caused by inflammation. Resist the urge to squeeze. We know. It's hard. But trust us.

Pustules — the classic "spot": a papule with a visible white or yellow centre. Still: please don't squeeze.

Nodules and cysts — deeper, more painful, and prone to scarring. These are the ones that warrant professional support, not home remedies.

Who Gets Acne?

Almost everyone, at some point. While acne is most associated with teenagers (thanks, hormones), adult acne is extremely common - particularly among women, where hormonal fluctuations, stress, and certain skincare products can all be contributing factors. If you’re sitting in your thirties, forties or beyond wondering why you are still dealing with breakouts, you are far from alone.

So….What Actually Is Acne?

At a High Street spa like ours, we most commonly work with clients experiencing:

Mild to moderate acne — persistent breakouts, congestion, and blocked pores that feel impossible to shift

Adult hormonal acne — often concentrated along the jawline and chin, flaring with the cycle or during periods of stress

Post-acne marks and hyperpigmentation — those stubborn red or brown reminders that hang around long after the breakout has gone

Congested, oily skin — not always active acne, but the kind of skin that feels perpetually "grumpy" and prone to blockages

These are real, everyday concerns — and the good news is that we have some genuinely effective tools to address them

How We Help: Our Acne Treatments

DermaQuest is an American skincare brand with serious science behind it, and their Dermaclear collection was built specifically with acne and congestion-prone skin in mind. The Dermaclear Facial uses a thoughtful combination of AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) and BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) to gently exfoliate, clear existing breakouts, and — crucially — work to prevent new ones from forming.

BHAs, particularly salicylic acid, are oil-soluble, meaning they can get into the pore and dissolve the debris that's causing the blockage from the inside out. AHAs work at the surface, improving skin texture and promoting healthy cell turnover. Together, they're a rather elegant team.

What makes our DermaClear Facial extra special is that it incorporates Blue Light LED therapy from our medically graded Dermalux machine. This isn't a gimmick — the science is genuinely compelling. Blue light at 415nm is absorbed by the P. acnes bacteria itself, triggering a reaction that effectively neutralises it. No irritation, no downtime, no discomfort — just your skin, bathed in a rather calming blue glow, becoming a significantly less hospitable environment for the bacteria responsible for your breakouts. It's a little bit like evicting a very unwanted tenant, quite peacefully.

The Dermalux is a medically graded device, which means the quality and precision of that light delivery is in a completely different league to the at-home LED masks you might have seen online. Results from a course of treatments can be significant — reduced active breakouts, calmer inflammation, and a more balanced, clearer complexion overall.

Lira Clinical SmartPeels - Targeted Acne Protocols

Lira Clinical is an award-winning cosmeceutical brand that has been at the forefront of progressive skin resurfacing since 2010 — and their SmartPeel™ technology is something we're genuinely proud to offer.

Rather than the old-school approach of hitting the skin with a single, aggressive acid solution (and the redness and downtime that came with it), Lira's SmartPeels™ use a progressive, layered approach. Active ingredients — including AHAs, BHAs, retinol, plant stem cells, and their proprietary MASQ-tech™ technology — are delivered in a way that maximises results while minimising irritation. Think of it as the difference between a sprint and a well-paced run: you get further, with much less chance of injuring yourself along the way.

For acne-specific concerns, Lira Clinical offers targeted protocols designed to address congestion, active breakouts, and the hyperpigmentation left behind once those breakouts have healed. These treatments are bespoke — your therapist will assess your skin and select the most appropriate peel protocol for your specific concern, whether that's blackheads and oiliness, active pustular acne, or post-acne marks.

Lira Clinical's approach also recognises that the skin needs to be conditioned and supported both in the treatment room and at home — so your therapist may recommend a supporting home-care routine to get the most from your in-clinic sessions.

Ready To Begin?

If any of this has resonated — whether you're dealing with active breakouts, persistent congestion, or the aftermath of past acne — we'd love to see you.

Book a skin consultation with Elizabeth or Kortni, and we'll take the time to understand your skin properly before recommending the right treatment path for you. No pressure, no one-size-fits-all solutions, and absolutely no toothpaste!
