Stress Less, glow more: The secret to beautiful skin.

Stress less, glow more: the secret to healthier skin

In today’s fast-paced world, stress is an inevitable part of our lives. But did you know that it can take its toll on your skin too? As the body’s largest organ, the skin often reflects what’s happening inside your body.

As April is Stress Awareness Month, we asked our Spa Director Elizabeth to explain how stress affects our skin and what we can do to minimise its impact.

The stress-skin connection

When stressed, your body produces more cortisol, the “fight or flight” hormone leading to increased oil production explains Elizabeth. If you’re already susceptible to inflammatory conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema you may likely experience flare-ups during times of stress.

Stress can also break down collagen and elastin – the proteins that keep your skin firm and youthful – resulting in premature ageing.

It can also affect the skin’s barrier function, leading to dehydration and making the skin more susceptible to irritants and allergens.

Recognizing these signs is crucial in adapting your skincare routine to counteract these effects explains Elizabeth.

From stressed to best

Let’s look at how you can reduce these effects with a targeted skincare routine:

[1] Cleanse with a gentle touch

During stressful times, your skin can become more sensitive and reactive. Choose gentle cleansers, like Crystal Clears Soothing Cleanser, that don’t strip your skin of its natural oils. This helps to reduce irritation and maintain a healthy skin ecosystem says Elizabeth.

[2] Hydration is key

Chronic stress can also disrupt the epidermal barrier – the top layer of the skin that locks in moisture. This can lead to dehydration making your skin look dull and tired.

Try introducing products that contain hyaluronic acid into your daily routine advises Elizabeth. Dermaquest’s B5 Advance Serum, is a powerful humectant that draws moisture into the skin, keeping it hydrated and plump. It has a variation of small, medium and large hyaluronic molecules, so is effective in treating all layers of the dermis and epidermis. It’s like eight glasses of water for your skin in the form of a serum. A well-hydrated skin can better resist the negative impacts of stress.

[3] Anti-stress Ingredients

“Look for products containing antioxidants like Vitamins C and E, which fight free radicals – harmful molecules that can be increased by stress and environmental factors,” recommends Elizabeth.

While aloe vera and chamomile have calming and anti-inflammatory properties. They soothe stressed skin and reduce redness.

[4] Facial massage – the stress reliever

Try adding facial massage into your skincare routine, suggests Elizabeth. “Our Gua Sha Facial is a brilliant way to de-stress. Gentle upward strokes can improve blood circulation, relieve tension and help in lymphatic drainage, reducing puffiness and boosting skin vitality.”

And relax…

Try these to de-stress mind and body:

[1] Breathing exercises

Elizabeth is a Zen meditation and mindfulness teacher, and she explains that breathing techniques can be a very effective way of reducing our stress response, “When you learn to breathe more effectively, you can actually calm yourself down, and soothe your nervous system” says Elizabeth. “Inhale for three counts, hold for four and exhale for five. Repeat five times. This technique can instantly reduce stress levels, reducing your heart rate and blood pressure. It helps return your nervous system in to a parasympathetic state, our rest and digest state.”

[2] Schedule time for relaxing activities

Why not indulge yourself with a professional massage or facial. It’ll not only make your skin glow, but a little me-time pampering will make you feel more relaxed too.

[3] Mindful relaxation

Spend time in nature, even if it’s just a short walk in a park at lunchtime. Being in nature has been scientifically proven to also soothe our nervous system and also boost our immune function. It can also have a very therapeutic effect on your mind.

Dedicate five minutes daily to mindfulness. Sit in a quiet place, close your eyes, and focus on your breath.

[4] Healthy lifestyle choices

Eating a healthy diet and avoiding ultra-processed food, as well as getting plenty of sleep will help your stress management. While regular exercise can help you lower levels of your stress hormones and help take your mind off the cause of your stress.
